Heritage Center near San Galgano, Siena, Tuscany

Tuscany has seven locations nominated  World Heritage Sites and all of them can be easily reached by car from our farmholiday. The closest spot is at just 40 minutes drive from where we are settled. We are talking about the historic center of Siena, its artistic and urban shapes are a magnificent example of Gothic architecture and medieval style, one of the finest examples of local art that reaches its top in Piazza del Campo, shell-shaped square in the heart of the city and in the Cathedral, the Duomo inside of which are preserved masterpieces of the most famous Tuscan artists, most notably Michelangelo.

Heading south through the Crete we reach the Val d’Orcia a natural and cultural area a which impresses travelers so deeply. It’s almost a surreal and dreamy land, from here come the finest and appreciated Italian wines, such as Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano. The impressive view over the Val d’Orcia, which has inspired many painters of the Renaissance, is marked with many small villages, castles, abbeys. Inside this park we find another Heritage Site, Pienza with its historic center. It is known as the “ideal city”: a unique site designed by the great Renaissance humanist Pope Pius II, with its narrow winding streets and the beautiful Palazzo Piccolomini.

Not far from Pienza undoubtedly the towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino deserve a visit. Always keeping Siena as a reference point and moving on northwest we reach the fourth Heritage  site of San Gimignano. Symbol of Tuscany and land of countless culinary excellences as saffron and the famous Vernaccia wine,San Gimignano fascinates us with the famous medieval towers that stand against the sky,  creating a unique skyline, this is a perfect combination of local art and architecture, in harmony with the beautiful surrounding.

Moving now to the north we arrive to Florence introduced in 1982as the the first undisputed (1982) World Heritage Site. The cultural identity of this city with infinite wonders lies in its artistic soul, which over the centuries has shaped the city we know today. Besides the historic center of Florence, another site included in the list of Heritage center(1987) was the Square of Miracles in Pisa. Dominated by the famous Leaning Tower, Piazza del Duomo is a pearl set in the historic center of Pisa, protected by the massive medieval walls.
